TO BE KIND

Why am I so lonely with such kind people
Who, being kind, look for a sign that I agree
That all of us with one big brush are coequal
Without ever knowing you or knowing me?

To know what kindness is you must lose everything
Till the ones you thought were strange in God’s eyes are the same
When everything is gone you see the one big thing:
Each a lonely candle in the pouring rain.

No act of kindness can ever be in vain
Always right on time the story line
This heart of mine prays for a rhyme
To find me and remind me to be kind

Life of course is mostly froth and bubble here
But in the mix two things will stand out like a stone
The first is kindness in another’s trouble here
And the second to have courage in your own

Few will have the greatness to bend history
But each his part accepted will look for a way
To look down only when it’s time to help you up
Though the right thing’s always easier to say

No act of kindness can ever be in vain
Always right on time the story line
This heart of mine prays for a rhyme
To find me and remind me to be kind

Kindness is a language that the deaf can hear
Kindness is a language that the blind can see
Each random act of kindness done for you, not me
Is its own reward if I just let it be

Cruel to be kind, I suppose in time
A case to be made if what’s yours is mine
But a smile is still the shortest way from you to me
And if the timing’s right can light eternity

No act of kindness can ever be in vain
Always right on time the story line
This heart of mine prays for a rhyme
To find me and remind me to be kind
