Evolution doesn’t care if we’re happy or we’re self-aware
As long as we get there, and there, it seems, is everywhere
But what you mean to me goes far beyond the here and now
The strike-outs and the nagging doubts, the wash outs and the walk-abouts
I would have done most anything to save you from your suffering
Denied most anything, to me you were my everything
Waiting for the phone to ring and on the other end I hear your tiny voice is crying as your mother says it’s time for bed
For thirty years and more our loving father asks:
“Did I do my best? Will he find his way? How did he go astray?”
But thirty years is not a long time to a son
Whose father’s guilt he doesn’t wish to add to what he bears
Late at night, when all the tennis courts go dark
Dad assesses and dad confesses he’s lost his Joan of Arc
Late at night, when all the stars light up the sky
For each other’s sake, both lie awake, neither knowing why
It tears him up each time to think of what the bloodline might have been
The family they were, it’s oh so sad but then again
He found another “her” and instantly, once she moved in
The bedroom was off limits to the luckless, lawless, little ones
Evolution doesn’t care if daddy’s home or never there
As long as we get there, and there, it seems, is everywhere
And what you think of it, the perfect fit or money pit
What’s done is done, get over it, nobody ever asked for it!
Thirty years from now, he’ll be a genius or a clown
But from now till then, my dearest friend, why do you wear a frown?
Were you the best father to ever live on earth?
And if you were, you’ll lose your crown, another mother just gave birth
Late at night, when all the tennis courts go dark
Dad assesses and dad confesses he’s lost his Joan of Arc
Late at night, when all the stars light up the sky
For each other’s sake, both lie awake, but neither says goodbye
I would have done most anything
