SMILES OF A WARM SUMMER NIGHT

Smiles of a warm summer night
Do you see it, little one?
The summer night is smiling for us
It has three smiles, the summer night
The first, from midnight to dawn
When young lovers open up
Their hearts and loins, a smile so soft
Hush, we must be quiet now
But not I, not I, a young love never was I

We invoke love and call out to it
Beg for it and cry for it
And, yes, we’ll mimic what we can
And when we must we’ll lie about it
But you and I needn’t worry
We are denied the love of loving
We don’t have the gift for it
Nor do we have the punishment`
Not I, not I, a young love never was I

I give up and the credit’s to you
You are the only one that I
Can show my unsightly nakedness to
My darling, how I pity you
Summer night’s second smile is due
For the jesters and the fools
And those too far beyond our help
On us the summer night is smiling
Not I, not I, a young love never was I

Faithful to you in my way
Eternities of pleasure
Tender whispers, frozen smiles
None of which has lasting meaning
Now without further ado
Summer night’s third smile for you here
And the lost and sleepless souls
For the confused, the frightened, and the lonely
Not I, not I, a young love never was I
Not I, not I, a young love never was I
Not I, not I, a young love never was I
Not I, not I, a young love never was I
