NO MATTER WHAT I DO

No matter what I do, one of us is always wrong for you
No matter what we do, one of us is never there for you

If I can be as confusing and as difficult as possible
You’ll have to stick around just to figure me out
If I can prove that my pain is truly inexhaustible
You’ll have to light up as I fade it out
Meanwhile I’ll do my impression of Mr. Indestructible
While you do your burlesque of Miss Vulnerable
And in these family ways we’ll seldom ever have to meet
At least not in the way that might make us whole

I think I’ve learned a lesson or two, but when you phone me right out of the blue
I’m in a funk familiar to me called “you-you-you”
(la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la)

Half-truth here, total lie there
I’m moving hit-or-miss while you’re still in paralysis
Did you say that? Did I think this?
I wonder, “Can we sell our play-by-play analysis?”
Half-life here, nearly dead there
It all seems safer if you never aim you never miss
Why stand up when you can lie down?
And why get bothered? Nothing’s ever going to come of this

To live for both of us, without us, I had to learn to sing
For both of us, without us, some language never known

If I can learn to fly and be so many places at once
Maybe I can break out from this prison of ours
If I can see past the mask of every silly masquerade
What I make of myself can never be yours
Meanwhile, I’ll do my impression of what might have been
While you do yours of what never will be
I can stay up all night wondering how to make it right
But when you don’t get what you need, is it always on me?
I think I’ve learned a lesson or two
But when you phone me right out of the blue
I’m in a funk familiar to me called “you-you-you”
(blah-blah-blah-blah-blah-blah-blah-blah-blah-blah-blah-blah-blah-blah)

Half-truth here, total lie there
I’m moving hit-or-miss while you’re still in paralysis
Fairy-tale here, make-believe there
I wonder can we sell our play-by-play analysis?
Half-life here, nearly dead there
It all seems safer if you never ever really care
Why stand up when you can lie down?
And why get bothered? Nothing’s ever going to happen here…

No matter what I do, one of us is always here
No matter what I do, one of us is always here for me
