ALL ALONG

Was I once something complete, completely alive?
To at least one person. Was that person you?
If I was, then I’m happy
If I was, then I know that my life was worthwhile
And there was a reason to laugh and smile all along

Every friend is like a world that lives within us
A world that would not be if not for them
If you live to a hundred
To a hundred I’ll live, but minus one day
So I will not have had to miss you at all, all along

If I had a rose each time I thought about you
In our garden I could walk without an end
In the ocean, two islands
On the surface apart, but joined in the deep
When the world walked out, you walked right in and stayed all along

If convenient come to me again, come here now
If inconvenient come here all the same
Not in words but in meanings
Which of all my important nothings to share
To feel again the joy I’ve known with you all along
