THE HEART’S A LONELY HUNTER

Try not to laugh when I tell you this:
I make music that no one else has
Would you like to hear?
Like water falling down a hill
Like the leaves before it starts to rain
Floating in mid-air
The dream that moved me flew away
To some far island in the sea
Why is it darker when a light goes out
Than if it had never shown at all?

Her face broke into a thousand different pieces
And try as she might she could not put them back in their place
You can’t love me, but at least do not hate me
But she was asking too much for too little of her that remained

If you could hear my music
It might help you through the darkest night
To the morning light
The notes and words go dancing
Some to stay, some go another way
But it all still works
I had this feeling of destiny
But you say it’s only for the young
I’ll meet someone, get married, have some kids
That’s life, you say, that’s all there is

But can you tell me why my leg is still hurting
When both of us know that it’s gone and will never come back?
It’s phantom pain, the doctor told his son
Your nerves, with the passage of time, will no longer feel it

The heart’s a lonely hunter
Yes, I come here almost every day
Why did he do it?
We all brought our troubles to him
Never thinking he might have his own
The mute live alone
I get so scared sometimes, I’m growing up
That’s what frightens me most
Just this once, let me have the thing I want
I’m no kid anymore, but I wish I was
I think I’ll stay just a little longer here
These flowers I brought I’ll arrange one by one just for you

Mr. Singer, can you hear me when I say:
Though I miss you more now than I loved you
It’s true: I love you
Though I miss you more now than I loved you
When you were still here
Though I miss you more now than I loved you, I love you
