THE MEANING OF MY CLICKING HEELS

The meaning of my clicking heels
The tearing of my shirt that nothing you know can heal
You’ll have to wait for me, for once I’m in control
And if I don’t show up at all you’ll have to go home
And wonder to yourself what was it that you missed

I checked into the hotel
The proprietor he told me that the show may begin
No earlier than very late, perhaps too late
For one like me who’s never even known what it’s like
To fall beneath the weight of a tragic twist of fate

He sang of love, he sang of hate
Of growing old too soon and growing wise far too late
And in my own country the fundamental sin
Of slavery has found no voice without or within
Is that why we don’t feel more than what we feel?

The holocaust we think we know
Only ‘cause we have the film to prove that it’s so
Of all the humans on this earth throughout all time
How many slaves? How many killed?
How many could not find mercy of any kind
The blind eating the blind

Out from the stage and through the crowd
A swelling wave of longing and a painful refrain
Shouting, calling, yelling, clapping, howling, laughing, finger-snapping
Anything to show that we are still here alive
The ones you love to hate can show you how to love

The meaning of my clicking heels
The meaning of my clicking heels
The meaning of my clicking heels
The meaning of my clicking heels
